PKR will stick with Anwar Ibrahim as Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for prime minister, despite reservations from DAP and Amanah.
“We want to tell DAP and Amanah not to be swayed in this matter as we will not move away from nominating Anwar as prime minister,” PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin told a PKR gathering in Ampang today.
“Don’t be swayed or name someone else,” said Shamsul, who is also Hang Tuah MP.
He said Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s era had passed and it was now time for Anwar to be the main focus.
“But, we are disappointed that the component parties want someone else,” said Shamsul.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said PKR is ready to work with any party that feels the same way about Anwar as prime minister.
“PKR must be the main pillar in Pakatan together with DAP and Amanah. And, we will not reject anyone so long as they know we will only support Anwar as prime minister,” said the Lembah Pantai MP.
He said Anwar is the right candidate because of the struggles he has gone through.
“Pakatan has given the full mandate for Anwar to meet and discuss with anyone ways to return power to the people.”
In June, Dr Mahathir had suggested that Pakatan Plus name Warisan Sabah’s Mohd Shafie Apdal as its candidate for prime minister instead of Anwar.
The decision was initially said to have been backed by DAP and Amanah. However, the two parties appear to have backed down from the decision and have said they will back Anwar again. – July 26, 2020.
