THE police must investigate Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s extraordinary wealth, says an Umno Youth delegate, as the party’s wing intensified criticism of their former president turned nemesis.

Kedah delegate Mohamed Noor Mohamed Amin urged for an investigation into the RM30 billion foreign exchange losses suffered by Bank Negara Malaysia back when Dr Mahathir was prime minister.

“If they can expose us, we can also expose them. The RM30 billion is real loss not paper loss,” Noor of the Baling Umno Youth division said during his debate speech.

Noor said it was an offence for those holding public office to hide money or government correspondence.

“If I receive money from my division chief and I hide it from my members, it is an offence. If I receive money from my Youth chief but without a statement, it is wrong.”

A Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) recommended that action be taken against Dr Mahathir, former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim and former Bank Negara officials for criminal breach of trust and fraud.

Critics have called the RCI a farce for investigating something that occurred in the 1990s, while the government has ignored allegations of financial scandals concerning state firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MBD).

The RCI also comes at time when Dr Mahathir is part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition that is challenging Umno in the 14th general election next year.

Earlier Mohamed Noor wanted the government to allow aid for farmers and fishermen to be handed out by Umno politicians and elected representatives, and move that will surely increase Umno’s political mileage with rural folk ahead of the 14th general election.

“To MPs and assemblymen, please allow Umno Youth members to also distribute some of the aid.”

Currently, cash transfers to these groups, as announced in the 2018 Budget, are distributed through recipients’ bank accounts.

Under the programme, farmers and fishermen will receive RM200 per month in-between harvest seasons and during the monsoon season when they cannot go out to sea. – December 6, 2017.
