SPEND money to save the economy, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin urged Malaysians today.
Launching a buy Malaysian campaign, he said this kickstart the economy after the movement-control order to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“Malaysians should spend for Malaysia, as our spending will help our country’s economy to be competitive.
“We will ensure that what you spend on will be value-for-money local goods which are of quality,” he said when launching the campaign at Suria KLCC.
Increased consumer spending will have a trickle-down effect on employment and earnings, he said.
“With more spending, there will be a greater multiplier effect on the economy, creating more jobs and increase people’s earnings.”
The campaign will bring together industry players, government agencies and the people to revive the economy following the MCO, he said.
The campaign is broad-based and covers services like tourism, healthcare and logistics.
“Even though the country’s borders are not opened yet, we are confident the domestic tourism will contribute to the economic recovery phase,” he said.
Putrajaya has allocated RM20 million for the buy Malaysian campaign.
The unemployment rate worsened from 5% in April to 5.3% in May following the MCO imposed in March. – July 18, 2020.
