ONE in five Malaysians aged 18 and above – or about 3.9 million people – has diabetes, according to the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS 2019).
Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, presenting the findings at the ministry today, said the prevalence of the disease in the country has increased to 18.3% from the 13.4% recorded in 2015.
“The rise in diabetes cases is among the worrying findings of NHMS 2019. About 49% of diabetics in Malaysia have never been screened or diagnosed with the disease.”
The survey revealed that Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Pahang have the most diabetics.
Dr Adham said one in four Malaysians aged 16 and above is not physically active, and about 50% of adults are overweight.
He said 95% of adults do not meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables.
The survey also showed that about half a million people suffer from depression, with the highest prevalence in Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan and Perlis.
Dr Adham said some 424,000 children have mental health issues triggered by interactions with peers, among others, as well as behavioural and hyperactivity-related problems.
“We want a healthy Malaysia,” he said, urging people to be more responsible about their health. – Bernama, May 29, 2020.
