THE Penang government has received almost RM2.5 million in donations for its flood relief fund.

Of the RM2.48 million, RM1 million was from the Selangor government, as announced by Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali on November 5.

The cheque was presented to state finance officer Sarul Bahiyah Abu by PKR’s Seberang Jaya assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin today on behalf of the PKR-led Selangor government.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng also announced a number of other donations at the state legislative assembly today.

The Penang Chinese Chambers of Commerce donated RM800,000, while the Malaysian and Penang Moral Uplifting Societies gave RM80,000 and RM60,000, respectively.

Another RM100,000 came from the Selangor Kajang Temple, while RM40,000 was donated by the Taiwan University Graduates Association.

Lim said the promised RM500,000 from the Johor Darul Ta’zim football club arrived yesterday.

“The money was sent to the state secretariat yesterday. Penang extends its thanks to Tunku Ismail Idris Sultan Ibrahim,” he said, referring to the Johor crown prince who is also the owner of the club.

Meanwhile, Penang Bangkit coordinator Steven Sim announced that Penang clinics were now offering free medical services for all flood victims in the state for a month.

He said 59 clinics in the state, along with their doctors, who are all with the Malaysian Medical Association’s Penang Branch and Penang Medical Practitioners Society, were starting their free services today.

Those seeking medical treatment at the 59 clinics can visit the penangbangkit.com website for their addresses.

Sim, who is Bukit Mertajam MP, said electrical goods companies Wah Lee Electrical and Pensonic Holdings were offering free repairs for items damaged in the floods.

Wah Lee Electrical has 12-month interest-free instalment plans for flood victims who need to replace their televisions, refrigerators and washing machines.

“Wah Lee Electrical will bear the first two months’ instalments, so that customers only need to pay the remaining 10 months’ instalments,” said Sim.

Pensonic is donating 700 rice cookers to Penang Bangkit and offering a 50% discount for selected electrical appliances to victims registered with the state government.

Pensonic is also offering a one-to-one exchange for all Pensonic items still under warranty that had been damaged in the floods.

“For items no longer under warranty, Pensonic is offering free repairs and a 50% discount on replacement parts,” said Sim.

Those in need of aid can get further details on the Penang Bangkit website. – November 13, 2017.
