Don't blame GPS for backdoor govt, Sim tells DAP

GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak (GPS) should not be blamed for the formation of the so-called “backdoor” government, said Dr Sim Hui Kian today.

The Sarawak United People’s Party president said it was Pakatan Harapan’s own manoeuvring that triggered the government’s collapse, paving the way for the opposition to take over.

“Who opened the back door in the first place?” asked Dr Sim.

Sarawak DAP leaders have in recent days issued a series of statements blaming the Sarawak pact for the fall of the PH government.

State party chief Chong Chieng Jen on Sunday said “no amount of excuses can exonerate GPS for putting Umno and PAS into federal government”.

Aside from the Umno-PAS alliance, GPS had also backed Muhyiddin Yassin for the prime minister’s post. 

The support of GPS’ 18 MPs was highly sought to tip the balance, when Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and Muhyiddin failed to get the required majority support.

Sarawak DAP even made a last ditch effort by making concessions and an offer to work together with GPS “to help preserve the PH government and prevent extremists from seizing power through their backdoor operation”.

GPS rebuffed the offer, calling it “insincere” as DAP has never kept its promises.

Dr Sim, who is state Housing and Local Government Minister, said if the two main parties in the PH government, DAP and PKR, had not “created issues” for Dr Mahathir, the PH government would still be around today.

“They should look at themselves in the mirror. If no one opened the door there would be be no front or backdoor government.

“Someone from inside (PH) opened the door. Don’t blame others,” Dr Sim said to reporters after attending an inter-faith harmony forum in Kuching today.

He said when the scheming against Dr Mahathir started, no one in the peninsula gave two hoots about Sarawak.

“When they need Sarawak, they look to us. And when things don’t go their way, they blame us.”

Initially GPS threw their support behind Dr Mahathir – similarly with DAP and PKR.

The two PH parties made an about turn when the Langkawi MP wanted to form a unity government.

When the former prime minister resigned from his position and his chairmanship in Bersatu, while at the same time giving the impression he longer is interested in continuing as prime minister, GPS switched their support to the Bersatu president, who had stepped forward to take Dr Mahathir’s place.

Dr Sim said the constant changing of alliances and pledges of support in the last one week had shown “the true colours of those (DAP and PKR) elected politicians”.

He said the political tumult of the past week had also shown “Sarawakians cannot be played (around with) or be conned by sensational and emotional appeals”. – March 3, 2020.

  • No one wants to play out Sarawakians, but the Sarawakians has long in the history offered themselves to be played. This is the reason why Sarawak is less developed than West Malaysia.
