MUHYIDDIN Yassin had 114 MPs backing him as the next prime minister, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said.
“It’s 114 out of 222. It means we cross the line” for a simple majority, he told reporters outside Muhyddin’s house in Bukit Damansara, soon after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah announced the Bersatu president as Malaysia’s eighth prime minister.
Muhyiddin is to be sworn in as PM tomorrow at Istana Negara at 10.30am.
“This is a majority government – 114 is a majority – with PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak contributing to it,” Takiyuddin added.
Until this morning, GPS appeared to be a wild card. The Sarawak coalition has 18 MPs from parties that quit Barisan Nasional after the 14th general election and became independent under the Pakatan Harapan government.
With the 114 MPs mentioned by Takiyuddin, it means GPS had thrown its lot in behind Muhyiddin.
PH, with 92 MPs, had been confident earlier today that Dr Mahathir Mohamad had the numbers, after he, as well as Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, broke ranks with the party to nominate Muhyiddin.
They also denied signing any statutory declaration in support of the Bersatu president.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was also confident earlier that more Bersatu MPs would switch their allegiance. SUPP’s Richard Riot did so to join PKR
Sabah parties Warisan (9) and Upko (1) also announced support for Dr Mahathir.
All this would have brought support for Dr Mahathir to at least 105 MPs.
PH is planning to appeal the Agong’s decision with the use of statutory declarations signed in support of Dr Mahathir and is currently holding a meeting on the matter. – February 29, 2020.
