RED Shirts leader Jamal Yunos apologised in court today for blaming supporters of Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin for his bloody nose following a scuffle with the police in Kuala Lumpur last November.

His statement of regret was read out at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before judge S. Nantha Balan, who ordered the Sungai Besar Umno chief to pay an undisclosed amount to Zuraida.

The clash between the Red Shirts and police occurred at Ampang Point Mall on November 13 after Jamal led his supporters to tag Zuraida and other volunteers who were handing out Bersih 5 leaflets.

Jamal was left with a bloody nose after clashing with police, who ordered him and his supporters to disperse.

He later told the media that “budak Zuraida pukul saya (one of Zuraida’s boys hit me)”.

“I uttered those words against the plaintiff in anger, therefore, I regret what I said,” he read out from a statement in court today.

Present were Zuraida’s lawyers, N. Surendran, Latheefa Koya and Shahid Adli. Jamal was represented by V. Mugunthan, Mohammed Nasser Yusof and Mohamad Fauzi.

“I hereby withdraw my comments I had said during a tense situation at Ampang Point Mall against Zuraida Kamaruddin,” Jamal added.

“In addition, I also promise not to repeat any further comment in relation to the incident on November 13, 2016, against the plaintiff.”

Jamal had also made threatening comments following the scuffle last November.

“Saya tak puas hati. Saya akan kejar mereka lebih dari apa saya umumkan. (I am not satisfied. I will come after them with more than what I’ve said.),” Jamal was quoted as saying then.

“Saya akan cincang mereka. (I will cut them up).”

Four days after the comments were made, Zuraida issued a letter of demand to Jamal seeking a retraction and apology for the defamatory words.

Jamal was also charged with rioting in April.

Jamal’s most recent encounter with the police was last month, when he smashed 20 cartons of beer in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam to protest a beer festival.

Jamal was arrested and remanded for three days over the incident. – November 7, 2017.
