MORE than 1,000 objections were filed with the Johor Election Commission yesterday to stop army personnel from being registered as voters in Segamat, said assemblyman Tan Hong Pin.
The objections were filed against the army personnel who were registered as voters at the Segamat camp, which is still under construction.
“We have found out that the camp will only be completed in April 16, 2018. So, how are they being registered now,” said Tan who is DAP’s Mengkibol assemblyman.
Bersih 2.0 deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman had earlier said they had that 1,051 army voters have been transferred to the Segamat camp.
He added the shift of army voters was discovered after checking the 2017 third quarter electoral roll.
Tan said that last Friday DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang went to check on the camp and they found that the construction signboard at the camp was missing.
“We are not sure when the camp will be completed. Whatever it is, they should not have registered the voters there,” Tan said.
Tan also said they have collected RM10,000 in donations to challenge the registration of the army personnel. Each objection costs RM10.
“If our objections are thrown out, then we will have to pay RM200 for each objection which is rejected.
“
Tan also said the EC has told them that if the army personnel showed the commission their transfer papers, then they are qualified to be registered as voters in Segamat.
“The defence ministry can come out anytime with the transfer letters. We are still awaiting a reply from the ministry if they will revoke the registration.”
Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had earlier dismissed allegations by opposition MPs about the transfer of troops in Segamat as a political strategy for Barisan Nasional for the 14th general election. β November 7, 2017.
