THE Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has denied being slow in issuing weather advisories, saying that a yellow alert was broadcast on November 1 on a television.
Deputy Minister Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah said the alert was updated on Saturday at 6pm, just as a heavy storm brought unprecedented flooding in Penang and inundated parts of Kedah.
“I don’t think the member from Cheras watches television. He doesn’t read (the news) and he will only find out about a flood when he’s actually in it,” Abu Bakar said in reply to Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, who had questioned the efficiency of the ministry’s weather warning system.
An argument broke out when Tan appeared unsatisfied with the reply.
“There’s a thing called forecasting. We have studied where and when the winds blow. The we can say when it is going to rain,” Abu Bakar said.
“If you don’t know, you can learn from me, I can explain it well. We have good equipment (to forecast the weather).
Almost all of Penang has been inundated by 0.2 to 1m of water after strong winds and heacy rain hit the state since Thursday.
So far, almost 6,000 people have been evacuated, and at least seven people have died. – November 6, 2017.
