POLICE should have detained individuals threatening to disrupt a congress on teaching the Jawi script in schools, not get a court order to stop it completely, said Ng Chai Heng.

Dong Jiao Zong’s secretary-general said although the group was not satisfied with the police’s decision, it would obey it.

“We are dissatisfied the police sought a court order on the grounds that the gathering would disrupt public order.

“The police should have acted against the individuals and groups who threatened to disrupt the conference, not stop the congress,” he said after a two-hour meeting with 17 Chinese educationist groups and civil society groups that were part of the planned congress.

It was to have been held at the New Era University College from 3pm to 5pm today.

Police had yesterday obtained a court order to stop Dong Jiao Zong from holding its controversial congress.

“We have just received the court order. We are currently discussing what to do,” Chai Heng had told The Malaysian Insight yesterday in confirming the event had been called off.

“We respect the court order, our meeting (today) will be cancelled.”

A court granted the order on the basis that police intelligence had indicated a riot would likely break out should the congress proceed.

“As such, the presence of a crowd at New Era College tomorrow is prohibited,” the order read.

The Kajang district police said it obtained the court order at 3pm and that those associated with the event should stay away from the venue.

“Many reports had been made nationwide about this congress. To ensure public security and keep the peace, police applied for a court order to prevent any disorder,” it had said.

It had said it would not hesitate to take action against anyone who disobeyed the order.

Malay groups had also today said it planned to hold demonstrations against the congress.

Ng said that Dong Jiao Zong had no problems with Malay groups protesting the congress, as everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

He added that the education group would also not have had a problem if the Malay groups wanted to join the congress, as long as they were intent on keeping the dialogue peaceful. – December 28, 2019.
