Sg Semenyih water treatment plant closed for second day

THE Sg Semenyih water treatment plant remains closed today due to water contamination, Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said.

The company said in a statement that Indah Water Konsortium and the Selangor Water Authority are engaged in clean-up work at the manhole near the sewage treatment plant where the effluent that caused the odour is being sucked out.

Activated charcoal has been applied to reduce the odour pollution in the river.

As of 6.30am the odour pollution is at the three-ton level. The Semenyih plant will remain closed until the readings reach the zero-ton level indicating no direct odour pollution.

Water supply has been disrupted since yesterday due to water pollution.

Meanwhile, the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant, which also receives raw water from Sg Semenyih river, has ceased operations since 3.30pm yesterday.

This has resulted in a water supply disruption to 336,930 accounts in 366 areas.

Air Selangor said emergency water supply will continue to be provided and tankers deployed to affected areas with priority given to consumers and critical premises such as hospitals.

In addition, 11 local service centres and public utilities (hydrants) are still operating 24 hours.

Air Selangor expects the restoration of water supply to take some time, but said all necessary steps are being taken to accelerate the recovery process and get the plant up and running again.

Air Selangor will keep consumers informed of the latest developments through various media.
