SENIOR Bersatu leaders are told to think about the party and not just about their positions in the party by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Bersatu chairman said that they are more interested in their fate in the party and ways to keep their positions so there are no challenges from others

“The senior members are not many and because of this there is not much competition (for their positions).

“Like we can see in the Tg Piai and Semenyih by-elections. We lost because we had limited members and not many people (senior members) to help out,” he said in his speech at the Bersatu youth wing (Armada) fundraising dinner in Shah Alam tonight.

Dr Mahathir said if they think the party is a place to achieve one’s personal goals then the party will fail.

“When we join politics, it is to fight for the party and not ourselves. If we don’t fight for the party, then we will lose. I hope that this (attitude) will change,” he said.

In the November 16 Tg Piai by-election, Barisan Nasional’s candidate Wee Jeck Seng won with a majority of 15,086 votes, 22% more than the 20,731 votes he received in the 14th general election last year, when he lost to the PH candidate Md Farid Md Rafik of Bersatu.

Wee of MCA polled 25,466 votes compared to the 10,380 for PH’s Karmaine Sardini.

The Bersatu chairman then praised Armada.

“For the younger generation, of course, they have the best ideas to carry out activities that will bring good to the party.

“They will try hard but, even if we don’t achieve much, but they tried.”

He said if the party is successful, then everyone will succeed. 

“Because the party can set up a good government that can fulfill all promises.

“This is what we are trying to do. We succeed because we fight for something good.” – December 2, 2019.
