UNIVERSITI Malaya has shot up to 13th spot in the 2020 QS University Rankings Asia, the best-ever performance by a Malaysian varsity on the list.

Last year, UM placed 19th in the Asia rankings.
For the 2020 QS Global Rankings, UM is in 70th spot, up from 114 the year before, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Three Malaysian public universities have made it into the top 200 of the global list. They are Universiti Putra Malaysia at 159, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (160) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (165).
Universiti Teknologi Mara made a big leap from 158 last year to 119.
Those in the top 1,000 are Universiti Teknologi Malaysia at 217, Universiti Utara Malaysia (591) and International Islamic University Malaysia (651).
“The rise in rankings is due to these institutions’ increased internationalistaion and collaboration with global giants,” said Maszlee in reply to a question by Aaron Ago Dagang (GPS-Kanowit).
The minister said private varsities, too, have made in into the top 1,000, among them UCSI University, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Taylor’s University and Sunway University.
“The rise in rankings is also due to the hard work of these universities’ administrators and management, and I want to congratulate them all.”
He added that the Pakatan Harapan government’s tertiary education policy aims to provide holistic learning that will produce marketable graduates.
“We are reviewing the curriculum of universities and schools to identify fields that may be irrelevant in the future job market. This is being done with university administrators and industry players.
“Our graduates will be able to compete not just in the local market, but also the global market.
“At the same time, we want our ivory towers to provide holistic education. We don’t want to produce merely workers, but intellectuals who can resolve society’s problems.” – November 27, 2019.

Razak in the 1970s created racial discrimination in education in Malaysia. The idea was to
make Non-Muslim/Malay fall backwards. The government did not realize the resilience of non-Malay parents who pushed their children to go overseas at great cost and succeed. It was Malaysia's BIG LOSS.
