A PROPOSAL by Barisan Nasional’s Jempol MP Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif for the Dewan Rakyat to begin proceedings by singing Negaraku and reciting the Rukun Negara has received cross-party support.

The proposal was supported by National Unity and Social Well-being Minister P. Waytha Moorthy, who then asked the speaker to make a ruling.

Salim made the suggestion during question time today.

He was asking a supplementary question to a principal question asked by Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, who asked about the government’s initiatives to increase patriotism and love towards the country, as well as the government’s actions against those who questioned the duties and responsibilities of Sultans, the police and servicemen.

Syed Ibrahim said the show of patriotism and the love for the country should not be “seasonal” thing only and suggested that more documentaries and movies, like hit film Paskal, be produced. Waytha Moorthy told parliament the government would not compromise and had acted on those who disrespected the flag by flying it upside down.

“The government will take action and we have taken action,” he said. – November 25, 2019.
