THE Sarawak PKR convention is to proceed this Saturday in Miri, despite objections from the party’s state chief.
PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said the decision to go ahead was made by the national political bureau this evening.
“We decided that the state convention in Sarawak is to proceed as planned.
“Baru Bian already knows from the statement issued by conventions director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad,” Fahmi told reporters after the political bureau meeting which was held in Parliament.
Baru, the Sarawak PKR chairman, who said he had the support of the majority of Sarawak PKR leaders, had cancelled the state convention to be held this Saturday to protest the party’s current crisis involving deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.
PKR Youth had previously retracted its invitation to Azmin to officiate its annual congress next month, amid the economic affairs minister’s growing rift with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Baru earlier today said he and other state leaders wanted the state convention cancelled as a protest against the national leadership’s disregard for decisions made by elected leaders, in favour of appointed leaders.
Baru, who is also Works Minister, said the national leadership had “dishonoured” the autonomy of Sarawak PKR leaders to decide their own affairs.
Nik Nazmi, on behalf of the national leadership last week, said the Sarawak convention had to proceed.
Anwar also said no one should threaten the PKR leadership, in remarks aimed at Baru. – November 20, 2019.
