BARISAN Nasional’s landslide win in Tanjung Piai shows that the people want the pact back in power, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The BN chairman said Wee Jeck Seng’s 15,000-vote majority is “beyond expectations”, and signified Malaysians’ dissatisfaction with Pakatan Harapan’s 18 months in Putrajaya.
The ruling coalition has disappointed voters by failing to keep its election promises, he said.
“It is a very clear signal that the people are protesting against the government,” he told a press conference in Pontian tonight.
“We see the Tg Piai result as a small referendum on BN and Muafakat Nasional,” said the Umno president, referring to the political pact forged between the BN lynchpin and PAS.
At the final count, BN won Tg Piai with a 15,086-vote majority. It lost the Johor federal seat to PH for the first time in last year’s 14th general election.
Zahid said Dr Mahathir Mohamad should step down as prime minister if that is what the people demand.
“If that’s what the people want,” he said when asked if BN’s victory indicated a revolt against the PH chairman.
“I don’t want to get involved in this… but if that is the people’s wish, he should do so immediately.” – November 16, 2019.
