BARISAN Nasional, as the underdog in the Tanjung Piai by-election, must work extra hard to win, said former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.
“This is not our seat. We are the underdogs.
“We are not in the government, and of course, we don’t feel like it will be a sure win, so we have to work very hard,” he said in the Johor federal constituency today.
He said he is “relieved” that BN decided to field MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng, whom he has known “for a long time”.
Hishammuddin called on the BN machinery to dispel confusion and negative sentiments fuelled by certain quarters’ racist rhetoric.
“It is important for us to go down to the ground and explain to the people, so that they make the right decision when they vote.”
The Sembrong MP said it is a good sign that no untoward incident took place during nomination earlier today, adding that if the situation remains as such, polling on November 16 will be a smooth affair.
The Tg Piai seat fell vacant following the death of Bersatu’s Md Farid Md Rafik in September.
In last year’s general election, Farid had beaten Wee, who held the seat since 2008, by just 524 votes. – November 2, 2019.
