ENGINEERING graduate Wong Kan Ye should be forgiven for his protest during a convocation ceremony if he is sincere about regretting his actions, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad also said the issue should be handled delicately without everyone getting emotional.

He added that Wong was in the wrong for staging his one-man protest calling for the resignation of Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim during his convocation ceremony on Monday.

“He did something that has not been done before. We can call him up (for discussion), and he has to genuinely regret his actions. The place of protest was inappropriate.

“Everyone makes mistakes. We can forgive him if he apologises to the vice-chancellor and to the university,” Mohamad said after attending the Selangor Umno convention in Shah Alam today.

On Monday, Wong had flashed a placard while on stage to receive his scroll demanding Rahim’s resignation due to the latter’s allegedly racist speech at the Malay Dignity Congress.

The university, one of the co-organisers of the controversial event, subsequently lodged a police report against Wong, accusing him of disrespecting protocol and disrupting proceedings.

Wong has denied the charges, saying he was making a stand against racism. He had also said that he would repeat his protest if given the chance.

At the Malay Dignity Congress, Rahim allegedly said in his speech that the change of government after the general election had destroyed Malay political dominance that Malay privileges were now being questioned by other communities.

He allegedly warned non-Malay communities not to challenge the social contract they had with the Malays. – October 19, 2019.

  • There is nothing to forgive. He stood up against racism and that is to be applauded. It seems that Mat Hassan has no qualms about allowing racism so long as its shown and displayed by Malay extremists. This seems to be the modus operandi of those who lost power in GE14. They cant accept the loss so dividing the country is the only way they see as the path back to power.

  • VC and Zainal Kling can be forgiven if they genuinely regret their actions, says ME. Hassan can also be forgiven if he genuinely regretted asking Wong to apologize, says ME. This is because VC, ZK and Hassan are all racial bigots and need to repent, I thank Wong for exposing them publicly.

  • No need for any apology to the VC and the university. Wong can express regret to the Chancellor. Has the VC apologised for his speech at the MDC?

  • Mat Hassan, you must be joking. Why must Wong regret for being anti-racist? It us you who need to bertaubat and ask the rakyat to forgive you for particioating in the infamous "congress" which was actually used for race baiting.

  • Mat, please do not side step the main issue. The racist rhetoric is harmful and pose gravious consequences to the society and that is more significant than merely voicing at the wrong place.

  • Who needs your forgiveness? You think too highly of your dignified self. :-D

  • Mat Hassan is the same person who in March 2018, called on BN Youth to go into coffee shops and overturn tables, and if those who did so were picked up the police, he would bail them out.

A fat lot of credibility does this idiot possess.
