SELANGOR’S contentious unilateral conversion bill will be put on hold for now, said Anwar Ibrahim.
The PKR president said Pakatan Harapan Selangor will consult all parties before amending its shariah laws to allow unilateral child conversions.
“(Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari) was here to explain that the matter has been postponed.
“He has also given the commitment to discuss it with all parties,” Anwar said after the PH presidential council meeting yesterday.
Anwar said this in response to whether Amirudin had briefed the presidential council on the unilateral child conversion issue in Seangor.
It was reported that Amirudin had planned to push through a state bill to allow the unilateral conversion of minors.
Currently, the consent of both parents are needed in matters concerning the conversion of a child in Selangor, but once the amendments are made, consent will only be required from one parent.
But before Amirudin could table the bill at the state assembly, Selangor Speaker Ng Suee Lim ended the state assembly sitting.
According to lawyers, the state amendment would contradict a Federal Court ruling earlier this year that declared the unilateral conversion of kindergarten teacher Indira Gandhi’s three children null and void.
On August 12, the Amirudin said the bill was also being reviewed by Selangor’s sultan.
“We will make sure that this matter is discussed thoroughly, because some of the issues are related to the interpretation of the federal constitution.
“So, we have to refer back (to the constitution),” Amirudin had said.
“At the moment, the Selangor sultan is also reviewing the paper,” he said referring to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. – August 31, 2019.
