AS the prosecution’s case ended at the SRC International trial today, Najib Razak’s lawyer has complained about the bench in the dock and how it was giving the former prime minister’s rear pains.
His lawyer has requested the court to allow Najib to sit on a cushioned seat during his criminal trials.
Lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made a request to Attorney-General Tommy Thomas and Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali to have some leeway to be made for Najib, who is 66 years old.
“It goes against the very concept of innocent until proven guilty. My client is already being punished,” he told the court.
During the duration of the 57 days of the SRC International trial, Najib is seated in the accused dock, which has a long bench.
“Sit down there on the plank, I invite you to sit for one hour,” Shafee told a press conference after the hearing.
“As young as you are, your buttocks are fleshier than Najib’s. Just see if you can handle it,” Shafee said in jest, drawing some laughter.
Currently, Najib is seated against two cushions, usually carried into the court by an aide.
Shafee said Najib is required to sit for hours during the trial period.
“I didn’t realise this because most of my clients that I defend are very young people. But Najib is in his 60s. His buttocks doesn’t that have much flesh. It goes through his bone.
“I’ve asked the A-G and the judge to look into it. They have to change the system.
“Why can’t they put a simple cushion? How much does it cost? I’m sure some of you have got relatives who have been charged.
“You don’t want your relatives to be seated like that and be treated like an animal,” he said. – August 27, 2019.
