THERE is no need for the authorities to investigate Dong Zong before outlawing the Chinese education body as the prime minister himself had called it racist, said Perkasa Chief Ibrahim Ali.
The Malay rights group leader said it was illogical for United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia to accuse the introduction of khat, or Jawi calligraphy, lessons in primary schools as a way to Islamise Malaysians.
“This has no relation at all. Khat is about creativity and art. Now the Dong Zong defenders are also saying that it is best for the government to recognise the UEC, first,” he said referring to the school-leaving examination that independent Chinese school sit.
Recognition of the United Examination Certificate for admission to Malaysian universities and the civil service has long been a sore point between Chinese and Malay supremacists.
“There is no need to wait (for the probe into Dong Zong to be completed),” said Ibrahim.
“This is all down to the political will of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to outlaw Dong Zong,” he said after officiating the Sabah Perkasa annual general meeting in Tuaran, some 40km from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
“Dr Mahathir said he is leaving it to the police to complete their probe… I hope he is not just saying this to calm anger among Bumiputeras and later decide not to ban Dong Zong,” he said.
Ibrahim said Perkasa has submitted a memorandum to the prime minister, calling for Dong Zong to be declared illegal and that almost all of Perkasa’s state chapters had lodged a police report against the Chinese education body.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamad today said police have received six reports against Dong Zong, after it vowed to launch a campaign to collect signatures in protest against the introduction of khat in vernacular schools.
Last Thursday, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the Chinese education group was being investigated under Section 504 of the penal code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. – August 18, 2019.
