AMANAH is the reincarnation of much-loved Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s PAS, says current president Abdul Hadi Awang’s former political secretary.
Dr Syed Azman Ahmad Nawawi, however, said Hadi has different qualities compared with the former Kelantan menteri besar Nik Aziz.
“Hadi focuses more on international issues and has built a strong reputation for PAS among an international audience,” said the Batu Burok assemblyman.
“Nik Aziz only emphasised on Kelantan and Malaysia only. But he had a unique personal touch with the Kelantanese and was very much loved and respected in the state,” Syed Azman told The Malaysian Insight.
To promote Amanah, vice-president Husam Musa has been telling the Kelantanese that PAS now is Hadi’s party and different from the one Nik Aziz had built when he was Kelantan MB and their spiritual leader.
PAS Kelantan is in decline and slipping into the “dark ages” after Nik Aziz’s death, said Husam.
“Hadi’s PAS is friendly with Umno while Nik Aziz’s PAS was enemy of Umno,” said political Dr Khairudin Damanhoeri, an analyst based in Kelantan.
For Mohamad Nordin Adam, who has been a branch chief for 33 years, Nik Aziz was closer to the Kelantanese.
Nordin and other committee members decided to close down the Kampung Laut branch in Tumpat because they were unhappy with the current PAS leadership.
The veteran leader was unhappy that Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob ignored their feedback on a joint state-federal government project called “Kampung Warisan”.
The Kelantanese were willing to overlook many issues plaguing the state because of Nik Aziz, said Syed Azman.
“Most people overlooked Kelantan’s lack of highways and traffic jams because Nik Aziz led a moderate and humble lifestyle.
“Although Kelantanese had to spend 10 to 15 hours on the road during the Raya season, they didn’t grumble so much when Nik Aziz was the MB,” he added.
“They were also willing to return to the state during the election season because of him.”
But since Nik Aziz’s death, the Kelantanese have grown more vocal about the state government’s shortcomings.
“They are now openly criticising the state on the lack of highways, inefficient rubbish collection and other small problems. These problems have always been there but they weren’t so vocal when Nik Aziz was the MB,” said Syed Azman.
Another sore point for them is the way the state government had treated the Orang Asli in Gua Musang, where the Kelantan government tore down blockades set up by the Temiar tribe, so that logging companies could continue with their activities in the area. – April 17, 2017.
