SELANGOR Umno and PAS today said they will back Amirudin Shari as menteri besar should he face attempts to replace him from within Pakatan Harapan.

The opposition allies said they will support Amirudin till the end of his term.

State PAS commissioner Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said the two Malay parties do not want a repeat of the so-called “Kajang Move”, which had caused political uncertainty in Selangor.

The 2014 episode saw a bid within PKR to topple then menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and have Anwar Ibrahim take up the post. However, the manoeuvre failed, and Mohamed Azmin Ali ended up becoming menteri besar.

Yunus said another political crisis triggered by an attempt to remove a leader who has the people’s mandate will affect Selangor folk.

“PAS and Umno, we support the Selangor menteri besar till the end of his term. We do not want the Kajang Move to happen again.

“We hope that there is no attempt (at such moves) because the victims are the people. Elections like the Kajang Move only waste the people’s money.

“I see that the Selangor palace, too, is not interested in such issues,” he told a press conference at the end of a coordination meeting between the parties at the Selangor Umno building in Shah Alam.

The Malaysian Insight previously reported that Amirudin’s position as menteri besar is under threat as a result of the sex clips linked to PKR deputy president Azmin.

A faction in the party is said to be planning Amirudin’s ouster, claiming to have enough support to see Ijok assemblyman Idris Ahmad being made the new menteri besar.

Asked if Amirudin’s performance is the reason for the reported attempt to have him removed, Yunus said the performance of the state government is a collective matter.

“The performance of the menteri besar is reflected in the performance of the state government. Before the elections, they said the initiative to care for the people would be continued. But with each passing day, there appears to be no such initiative.

“The water industry restructuring in Selangor is said to save the state millions of ringgit, but today, we see the state government tabling a budget (seeking) more money.” – August 8, 2019.

  • UMNO-PAS has a total of 5 state seats in an assembly of 56 seats, with PH holding 51 seats. What clout does a bunch of mosquitos have?

  • Only 5 seats, how to influence the outcome on MB choice? Unless DAP and PKR are split, otherwise no case. Amirudin has thrown a bomb out in the legislative house this time? He needs a lot of effort to convince the Non Malay in Selangor. He better choose a Malay majority seat in ge15. If not Non Malay votes will throw him out if the legislation.
