UMNO does not sanction Red Shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos’ actions yesterday when he smashed 10 cartons of beer bottles outside the Selangor state secretariat building to protest a beer festival.
“We do not sanction his doings,” Deputy Prime Minister and Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Jamal and seven other men were arrested early today for attending an illegal gathering and disturbing public order after his latest stunt and are likely to be remanded this morning at the Shah Alam court.
“He is also the chairman of the several groups,” Zahid said. “Yeah, he is one of our division leaders but he is one out of 191 head of divisions.”
“The other 190 did not smash anything,” he added.
Shah Alam police received a report from a security guard at the state secretariat and was investigating Jamal under Section 143 of the Penal Code for attending an illegal gathering, and Section 268 for causing a disturbance to public order.
Jamal told The Malaysian Insight yesterday that he wanted to hand over the beer cartons to Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali and his exco members, and to tell them that they could consume alcohol in their offices or homes, but not elsewhere.
“We are protesting that the state government should not allow festivals associated with beer, as they will corrupt the minds of the youth here.
“We came here to hand the beers to them, so that if they want to get drunk, they can get drunk in their office or their homes, but not elsewhere.” – October 6, 2017.
