UMNO and PAS have set their sights on 10 state seats in Perak, which they believe can earn them victory in the 15th general election, state Umno liaison chief Saarani Mohamad said.
These 10 seats will help the two Malay opposition parties get a two-thirds grip in the state legislative assembly and form the government, he added.
The 10 state seats are Titi Serong, Kuala Kurau, Kamunting, Hulu Kinta, Manjoi, Behrang, Chenderiang, Sg Rapat, Pasir Panjang and Tebing Tinggi.
The two-thirds majority can be achieved assuming that Umno and PAS retain the 30 state seats they already hold, Saarani said.
“At the very least, we will retain the seats we won in GE14, which is 27 under Umno and three under PAS. If we keep these, we can have a state government by simple majority,” he told the Bagan Datuk Umno division meeting today.
Pakatan Harapan formed the Perak government after GE14 despite having only 29 seats after two Umno assemblymen declared support for Ahmad Faizal Azumu from Bersatu to become the menteri besar.
The two Umno reps are Tualang Sekah assemblyman Nolee Radzi and Sg Manik assemblyman Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin.
Saarani was earlier announced as candidate for Perak menteri besar should Barisan Nasional and PAS succeed in taking back the state from PH in the next election.
Once traditional enemies, Umno and PAS began exploring political cooperation with each other after GE14 and will sign a formal charter on their pact on September 14 in preparation for the next general election. – August 4, 2019.
