TEACHERS can join Umno if they want and there is no problem in that, said Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa today.

The public service chief was commenting on Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s invitation for teachers to join Umno yesterday.

Tengku Adnan made the offer during a prize presentation ceremony at a primary school in Precinct 14, Putrajaya.

He handed out prizes for a competition called “Umno and Independence”.

A video clip showing him inspecting the school, while students sing the Umno party song and wave Umno flags, has been circulated.

The Putrajaya MP also invited teachers to contest for the post of division chief, branch chief or Youth chief.

“I have no issues with this,” Ali told reporters after officiating at a health seminar in Puspanitapuri, Putrajaya, today.

However, he declined to comment on another minister’s warning to teachers who criticised the government.

In March, Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid had said teachers who supported the opposition and criticised the government should leave the profession. – October 4, 2017.
