Dr Mahathir regime favours ‘rule of the jungle’, says Jho Low

FUGITIVE financier Low Taek Jho today slammed the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision allowing the government to confiscate RM49 million stashed in his father Larry Low Hock Peng’s bank accounts.

“The regime continues to favour the law of the jungle in pursuit of any inch of political gain,” his spokesman said in a statement.

“This seizure, much like the Mahathir regime’s recent attempts to seize the Low family home of 20 years, further demonstrates the regime’s shameful strategy of targeted harassment and willingness to abandon proper procedures.”

The statement added that today’s court action proved that the present government, against a backdrop of falling approval ratings, has failed to meet its promises with respect to basic human rights or the rule of law.

“The evidence is clear: it is simply not possible to receive a fair trial in Malaysia, where double standards prevail and power and politics override basic rights and freedoms.

“The improper seizure of assets purportedly linked to Mr Low is the inevitable result of illegitimate proceedings brought by the Mahathir regime, in which the outcome was preordained and politically motivated, blurring the lines between executive and judicial power.”

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today allowed the seizure of RM48.9 million in Larry’s seven bank accounts.

Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan ruled in favour of Deputy Public Prosecutor Aaron Chelliah after no third party appeared to stake a claim on the assets.

Larry was absent from the open court proceedings this morning. A warrant for his arrest was issued.

Larry is believed to be lying low overseas. Police are also seeking his son, better known as Jho Low, for questioning in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd financial scandal.

The government filed a suit in March 29 to seize at least RM48.9 million in Larry’s seven bank accounts, on suspicion the cash was linked to money-laundering activities. – July 19, 2019.
