NAJIB Razak today revealed that he used two personal credit cards to buy gifts and jewellery for a queen in 2014.
However, the former prime minister did not reveal which royal household she belongs to.
He once again took to Facebook to explain the RM3.3 million purchases he made in Italy.
“I used my personal credit cards to purchase the gifts.
“The queen of a country had written to my wife (Rosmah Mansor), and the gifts were for her and her entourage.”
He previously said his lawyers will explain the purchases, and the letter will be presented as evidence.
On Monday, Najib’s SRC International Sdn Bhd trial at the Kuala Lumpur High Court heard that almost RM4 million was charged to two of his credit cards in 2014 and early 2015.
The cards were used in Italy, Hawaii and Thailand, and the payments were settled via his AmBank current account.
The prosecution’s 47th witness, Yeoh Eng Leong, an AmBank senior vice-president in charge of credit card authorisation and fraud management, testified that at least a dozen transactions were made using a Visa platinum card and a Mastercard platinum card.
Najib said he spent about half a million ringgit at luxury brand Chanel’s store in Honolulu, Hawaii, during his trip to play golf with then US president Barack Obama in 2014.
“The RM512,000 used to buy Chanel goods in Hawaii was done when… I played golf with president Obama and met his entourage. More will be explained when this issue arises in court.”
The Pekan MP did not provide further details, but said he was viciously criticised for going on the trip when Kelantan was dealing with major floods.
“The truth is, the agreement with president Obama to play golf was reached months before the trip. We didn’t just (text via) WhatsApp and say, ‘Hey bro, let’s golf’.
“It was not just about golfing. There were also discussions on topics such as the economy and security issues.”
Najib said before he travelled to Hawaii, he visited Kelantan to check on the flood operations there.
“The task was then handed over to former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who was chairman of the National Security Council at the time.
“A day after I golfed with Obama, I left Hawaii to go to Kelantan.”
On December 22, 2014, US$130,627 (RM466,330) was charged for purchases at the Chanel boutique in Hawaii, the court heard on Monday.
Najib faces three counts of criminal breach of trust, three counts of money-laundering and one count of abuse of power.
The charges are linked to RM4 billion in loans issued to SRC International, for which he is accused of receiving RM42 million in his personal accounts in 2014 and 2015. – July 17, 2019.
