Umno will not betray PAS again, says Zahid

UMNO will not betray PAS as it had done in the past as the parties are in the same boat now, said party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He assured that there will not be a repeat of the 1978 incident when PAS was kicked out of the Barisan Nasional coalition following a clash over the unity government they had had in Kelantan.

“Umno will not betray in ‘Taawun Siyasi’ because in 1978, they (PAS) felt that they were betrayed by Umno.

“But the question of betrayal now doesn’t arise because of our fate of not just losing out on state elections but losing out in Putrajaya as well,” he said after officiating Tangga Batu Umno divisional meeting on Saturday evening.

“Now we are in the same boat as PAS as the opposition.”

PAS had previously formed an alliance with Umno in 1974.

The alliance broke down in 1978 and they have remained political foes up until BN lost in GE14 last year.

The parties have now forged a new cooperation with the intention of garnering the Malay-Muslim support to defeat Pakatan Harapan in the next general election.

In his speech to some 500 members, Zahid also assured that as long as he is Umno president, the question of betrayal will not happen.

“My name is Zahid Hamidi, there is no such thing as Zahid Hamidi betraying a friend, but friends have (betrayed). Never mind, we take the good and leave the bad,” he said.

He also reiterated that Umno will never join Bersatu as the party helmed by Dr Mahathir Mohamad is trying to destroy Umno.

Zahid said the Umno-PAS charter would also be announced soon.

He also said the technical committees of the respective parties will have to work out the details for the partnership to be cemented.

The former deputy prime minister said Umno will not compromise with religion, and will reject the Shia belief for going against Sunnah teachings, which is practised in the country.

“We don’t want to be enemies of any country that practices it (Shia) but please understand that we are Sunnah Wal Jamaal,” he said.

He also took a dig at Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, who sparked controversy on social media during his trip to Iran where he was seen praying on a headstone commonly associated with Shia beliefs.

“There is a minister who is the Shia head in the country. That minister, during his official visit, used the head stone. We see it as a deception,” he said. – July 14, 2019.
