PAKATAN Harapan member parties Bersatu and Amanah should be disbanded in the interest of Malay unity, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said this in rejecting a call made by Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Malay parties to link up to end a fractured community.
Ahmad Zahid added that Umno is firm in not cooperating with any party or leader who has close relationships with a party that neglects Malays and Islam, inferring to Bersatu and Amanah’s ties with DAP.
“We do not want a split in the Malay community but a reason for that is the existence of parties like Bersatu and Amanah. The best solution is to disband Bersatu and Amanah.
“Our stand is this, we reject any leader or party that works with a party that does not protect Malay-Muslims, and wants to implement a Malaysian Malaysia,” he said after launching the Tambun Umno division meeting today.
He also said Umno is ready to face any consequences for rejecting Dr Mahathir’s call, including facing deregistration.
“We will never join forces with Bersatu even if we are threatened with deregistration. Join me and fight for Umno.
“If Umno is deregistered again, our members should stand up and fight, and we should show them the Malay unity.”
Previously, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said Umno members would be absorbed into Barisan Nasional if Umno is deregistered by the government.
Last Friday, Dr Mahathir made a call for all Malay parties to unite with Bersatu.
He said he found more and more Malay parties being formed, which reduced the chances of them to win elections.
“Yes, join Bersatu. When our group is big, we become strong, but don’t stop others from joining the party (Bersatu), let them join.
“If we are split, we become weak – united we stand, divided we fall. (But) we find that there are people forming new parties – (now) we have become six, soon there will be 10, (then) 100.
“There are 30 people in one party. How to win (the election),” he said after the Johor Bersatu Aidilfitri open house at the Dewan Serbaguna Johor Jaya. – July 7, 2019.
