PERAK Umno liaison chief Saarani Mohamad will be named menteri besar if the Barisan Nasional-PAS pact manages to win the state in the next general election, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Ahmad Zahid said Saarani has shown great leadership by uniting the Umno divisions in the state.
“If the Sultan of Perak agrees, this is your menteri besar. I respect the way he (Saarani) manages the state divisions,” he said after launching Tambun Umno division meeting today.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) took Perak from the hands of Barisan Nasional (BN) in the last general election in a close fight.
PH won 29 state seats while Umno took 27. PAS won three seats.
Umno lost the chance to run the state by forming a cooperation with PAS after two of its state reps – Tualang Sekah’s Nolee Radzi and Sungai Manik’s Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin – threw their support behind PH’s Ahmad Faizal Azumu as menteri besar.
Ahmad Zahid said he is now confident that with proper cooperation with PAS, Umno can retake Perak in the next general election, winning more seats than the last polls.
“With the Umno-PAS unity, we can win 40 out of 59 state seats in Perak.”
He added it is important for Umno to have a good strategy to be able to win the state, including having direct BN candidates.
“Don’t think only Umno division leaders can become candidates. Anyone can become one, including direct BN candidates.
“We must have a thorough strategy to win back Perak and Putrajaya,” said Ahmad Zahid, who returned last week to head Umno after a six-month leave. – July 7, 2019.
