Malays don’t need Bersatu, says Zahid

THERE is no need for the Malays to join Bersatu and be politically united, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Dr Mahathir’s call for the community to unite under his party’s banner.

Ahmad Zahid said the process to reunite the Malays is already taking place via the working relationship Umno has with PAS – “the two biggest Malay-Muslim parties in the country”.

“The Malays do not need to go to Bersatu. The biggest Malay parties are Umno and PAS.

“The Umno-PAS ta’awun siyasi agenda is far more important in the unification of the race.

“It surpasses all political interests,” he said in a series of tweets today.

The tweets were in response to Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s appeal yesterday for all Malay political parties, including Umno, to merge with Bersatu, to unite and strengthen the Malay political base.

Dr Mahathir said he found more and more Malay parties being formed, which reduced the chances of them winning elections.

“Yes, join Bersatu. When our group is big, we become strong. But don’t stop others from joining the party (Bersatu), let them join.

“If we are split, we become weak, united we stand, divided we fall (bercerai roboh, bersatu teguh). (But) we find that there are people forming new parties, (now) we have become six, soon there will be 10, (then) 100.

“There are 30 people in one party, how to win (elections),” he said after the Johor Bersatu Aidilfitri open house in Johor Jaya yesterday.

He said this when asked whether he was inviting all existing Malay parties to join Bersatu to strengthen the Malays.

Ahmad Zahid said what is obvious is that the more Malay political parties there are, their hopes of winning elections will also diminish.

The question of Malay unity was shared by PAS deputy spiritual leader Ahmad Yakob, who described the Malays as weak because they are politically divided.

He added under the current political situation, there is no guarantee that PAS’ cooperation with any party could last for a long time.

“For now, we will continue our cooperation with Umno and other parties in Gagasan Sejahtera. But what will happen in the future will depend on the political landscape.

“We cannot guarantee we will remain like this as the political landscape can change.

“So far, that’s what we have now,” he said after launching the Kelantan charity drive at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baru today. – July 6, 2019.
