Malays divided because Dr Mahathir fought Umno, says Najib

THE Malays are now divided because Dr Mahathir Mohamad formed a new party to topple Umno from power, said former party president Najib Razak.

Najib said Umno fell after Dr Mahathir ganged up with other parties in Pakatan Harapan to bring it down from its perch.

“He formed an additional Malay party and he worked with others. I will give my official comment on his invitation after I hear the comments from DAP, PKR and Amanah,” he said today after opening the Setiawangsa Umno division delegates meeting today.

Dr Mahathir yesterday invited all Malay parties, including Umno, to join Bersatu in efforts to unite the Malays.

The Bersatu chairman said he found more and more Malay parties are being formed, which reduced the chances of them winning elections.

“Yes, join Bersatu. When our group is big, we become strong. But don’t stop others from joining the party (Bersatu), let them join.

“If we are split, we become weak, united we stand, divided we fall (bercerai roboh, bersatu teguh). (But) we find that there are people forming new parties, (now) we have become six, soon there will be 10, (then) 100.

“There are 30 people in one party, how to win (the election),” he said after the Johor Bersatu Aidilfitri open house in Johor Jaya yesterday.

The prime minister said this when asked whether he was inviting all existing Malay parties to join Bersatu to strengthen Malays. – July 6, 2019
