Declare Umno Islamic, Dr Mahathir tells PAS

PAS should first declare Umno Islamic before it works with the Malay nationalist party, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said.

He reminded the Islamist party that it had for periods in its history branded Umno a party of infidels (kafir).

“PAS, before it starts working together with Umno, should first declare Umno as Islam,” he told the Malaysian media at the Asean Summit in Bangkok today.

“Previously, PAS said Umno was ‘kafir’ (infidel)... because Umno worked with kafir people… but now they (PAS) are not calling Umno kafir.”

Yesterday the Islamist party adopted a motion to work with its nemesis on a permanent basis after having worked together on certain issues since the lynchpin Barisan Nasional party lost power.

The move also opened up the possibility of Umno and PAS sharing power in states both parties controlled.

Currently, Umno controls the Perlis and Pahang governments, while PAS holds power in Kelantan and Terengganu. – June 23, 2019.
