LATHEEFA Koya has assured the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on major public appointments of her presence at a July 4 meeting, said its chairman, William Leong.
He said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief was to have attended a PSC meeting on Thursday to answer questions on her appointment, but could not make it due to pressing matters.
“Latheefa postponed the meeting with the PSC because of her busy schedule, and not because she is not ready to answer PSC’s questions,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
He added that her attendance at Thursday’s meeting was not strictly required.
Leong said the human rights lawyer will, at the next meeting, address the committee’s three main concerns about the appointment of a former political party bearer as MACC chief commissioner.
The session will discuss the manner in which Latheefa was appointed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad without the approval of the PSC on major public appointments.
Latheefa’s MACC appointment was announced on June 4, to both praise and protest.
She replaced Mohd Shukri Abdull, who stepped down ahead of the expiry of his contract on May 17 next year.
On the role of the PSC, Leong said it has the power to call up any public-appointment candidate for questioning.
“The PSC has the power to call up anyone for clarification.”
It was reported that lawyer Syahredzan Johan said the PSC did not have a role in public appointments, nor was its approval required for such appointments.
The committee only serves to scrutinise and balance the executive’s decisions, he said. – June 22, 2019.
