LATHEEFA Koya inherited a united Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after her predecessor worked overtime to bring together two rival camps in the anti-graft agency, sources said.

Former MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull was the man responsible for uniting these rival camps, sources told The Malaysian Insight.

The rival camps emerged as a result of years of taking orders from the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

“Two different camps existed in MACC when Shukri took over in May last year. One was against their seniors taking orders blindly from the BN administration, while the other just followed instructions,” a source said.

“The rift also became worse when certain high-profile cases were dropped during that time.”

The source said things started to change when Shukri took over in May last year.

“And during his tenure, he managed to sort out the mess and unite MACC,” he said.

Latheefa was named MACC chief commissioner on June 4, replacing Shukri who cut short his two-year contract.

Her appointment was criticised by several quarters, including those from her former party PKR. However, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad defended the appointment.

The source added that Shukri also attended a briefing at MACC for Latheefa where she met with all state and department leaders.

“In the first meeting last Monday, Shukri explained MACC’s internal issues which he managed to clean up, including sorting out the different camps,” he said.

“He sorted out the mess in MACC in the one year he was there. Latheefa need not worry about heading a divided MACC.

“The MACC is now united to fight corruption at all levels.” – June 13, 2019.
