NAJIB Razak said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has “lost all credibility” after turning down a debate with him.
The former prime minister, who currently is on trial for corruption and money laundering involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) related funds, dismissed Lim’s statement earlier today urging authorities to investigate Najib under the Penal Code for activities “detrimental to parliamentary democracy” in July 2015 when several agencies were moving in on the 1MDB case.
“He has lost all credibility,” Najib told reporters outside the Kuala Lumpur court after his trial adjourned today.
Lim had also called for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the incidents in July 2015, which the DAP adviser dubbed the “Week of Long Knives Operation” that affected key national institutions such as the the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), police, Bank Negara, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the auditor-general.
Najib said Lim was afraid of confronting him about these issues in person.
“He is not satisfied after he has been shamed… He’s not brave to take up a challenge (to debate) but still wants to shoot from the back.
“Although Kit Siang could have asked me this during our debate, I have no problem if an RCI is carried out, no problem,” Najib said.
Last Thursday, Lim announced he would not debate Najib after the latter offered to do so. Both men frequently issue public statements against each other.
Lim, the Iskandar Puteri MP, declined a debate saying there were concerns that it would be turned into a racial matter, and also said it was pointless to debate Najib when the latter had been silent and “lied” for years about 1MDB’s scandals.
In July 2015, several ministers in Najib’s cabinet, including then deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, and attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail were removed or resigned.
There was speculation at the time that Gani was preparing charges against Najib for corrupt practices in connection with 1MDB. – May 29, 2019.
