HUMAN Resources Minister M Kulasegaran has been criticised over a speech he made on Wednesday in the run-up to the Rantau by-election, where he called on Indian voters to support Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr S Streram.
Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said the minister is being racist when he pitched the communal line to draw votes.
“He is clearly being racist for asking the Indians not to support Barisan Nasional candidate Mohamad Hasan, but to support Streram as he is Indian. What kind of politics is this?”
Khairy said this in reference to a recording of Kulasegaran’s speech that has gone viral.
He also warned that the country will be in chaos if DAP continues to carry out racist campaigns that go against the party’s call.
Kulasegaran is also Ipoh Barat MP and DAP’s national vice-chairman.
“DAP said they are a Malaysian Malaysia party, no more racist politics. It says Umno is racist for still wanting to talk about Malay privileges.
“DAP claims there should be more racial differences in the new Malaysia but when it comes to voting, this is what Kulasegaran is playing,” he said in a ceramah in Rantau last night.
The issue of race and religion appears to have come to a boil in the campaign after PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang called for voters to vote for Mohamad as the majority of voters in Rantau are Malays.
Hadi had said by voting Mohamad, the non-Muslim and non-Malays would not be sidelined as the teaching of Islam called for followers to be fair to all races.
“We must understand the meaning of voting. It is the duty of the leader who represents this area.
“Here we will learn why we have to choose Mat Hasan. He is Malay-Islam. He will not sideline the Indians, Chinese and others because this area is dominated by Malay-Islam,” Hadi said on Thursday.
A total of 14 polling stations with 53 polling streams have been opened for the ballot today that began at 8am. The polls will close at 5.30pm.
Some 20,793 people from 20,804 registered voters are eligible to vote today while 11 have sent their ballots by post.
The Rantau by-election is a four-cornered fight between Streram, Mohamad and two independent candidates, housewife R Malarvizhi and former lecturer Mohd Nor Yassin.
The by-election was called after the Federal Court dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad to set aside an Election Court decision to declare his victory in the 14th general election null and void. – April 13, 2019
