PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has advised Malaysians to accept the social contract agreed upon since before independence to avoid racial conflict.

Speaking last night at a Barisan Nasional rally in Rantau, he said Malay rights must be respected while other races are given the freedom to practice their own cultures and religions.

Each group, the Islamist party chief said, had shown unity when they were “enslaved” during British colonial times.

“The British put this multiracial society here. They put the Indians and the Chinese in the estates and mines. They enslaved the people, including the Malays.

“We have to realise this and not fight. Umno, MCA, MIC and PAS were the opposition then and we accepted the social contract.

“We accepted Islam as the religion of the federation, while other religions can be freely practised; and Bahasa Melayu as the national language while other languages can be used.

“Youths today don’t know the history of our country and they are influenced by social media. That is why our politics is immature,” he said in Taman Angsamas last night.

PAS is campaigning to help Barisan Nasional candidate Mohamad Hasan, the acting coalition and Umno chief, defend his state seat. Polling is tomorrow.

Hadi said voters should again pick Mat Hasan, as he is popularly known, because Rantau is a Malay and Muslim-majority seat.

Malays make up 53% of the voters in Rantau. The Indians, Chinese and other races only make up 27%, 19% and 1%.

One of Mohamad’s opponent is Pakatan Harapan’s Dr S. Streram, a non-Malay.

“Mat Hasan is a Malay Muslim. We are not sidelining the other races, but Rantau is dominated by Malay Muslims.

“We are frank with everyone. We have the same rights. Just do your duty and pick the candidate with the integrity, ability and capability,” said Hadi.

Hadi, who is Marang MP, said Pakatan Harapan could not even administer the country properly, always blaming the former Barisan Nasional government to cover up its own weaknesses.

“We must reject PH that fails to take care of the interests of Malay Muslims.

“They failed to take care of Tabung Haji. They are always blaming others,” – April 12, 2019

  • If all Malay majority constituencies must choose a Malay representative, Chinese reps would probably less than 10 seats, Indian and others all zero. Than what happen to the 40% plus Non-Malay population representation? Hadi has small eyes, cant see anything beyond Islam. He can't be a Malaysian Federal leader. Maybe he just managed to pass his mathematics subjects in school.

  • What social contract? It it in the Constitution or in the Reid Commission Report or the Cobbold Commission Report? The term is a political construct of Umno that originated in the 1990s together with the Ketuanan Melayu dogma.

  • He is talking like Zakir Naik. Muslims must elect a Muslim even if the Muslim is corrupted to the core! Preaching racism and apartheid. He is an anti national element.
