THE Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple task force questions the “silent treatment” from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on the status of their place of worship.

They are hoping that the AGC will meet up with the task force to explain who will be appointed as trustees to care for the 157-year-old temple, venue for riots last November over a land dispute.

Save Seafield Temple Task Force secretary V. K. Regu said that the announcement to set up a committee was made by Attorney-General Tommy Thomas early this year but there was still no action.

“There is still silence from the A-G’s side. We have sent two letters since January requesting for a meeting, but we have yet to receive a reply from them,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Following riots at the Subang Jaya temple on November 26 and 27 last year, sparked by the temple management’s refusal to relocate as previously agreed, the AGC said the 0.4ha plot on which the temple sits would be handed over to a court-administered trust.

Property developer One City Development Sdn Bhd at the time said it supported the comprehensive settlement for the land, which was proposed by Thomas and subject to terms to be agreed upon by the parties involved.

Regu said devotees are hoping for Thomas to meet up with the task force and explain the situation.

“They have taken action to say that the trustees will be appointed, but what is the current development?

“We don’t know what’s happening at the AGC. If they inform us then it will be good.”

The violence at the temple last year saw masked men storming the house of worship and intimidating devotees into leaving, and caused damage to property and vehicles.

It also led to the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, although the Coroner’s Court in Shah Alam is currently conducting an inquest to determine the cause of Adib’s death. – April 11, 2019.
