Umno-PAS agenda hinders Pakatan fight to be fair to all races, Anwar says

THE agenda pushed by Umno and PAS can cause racial tensions, warned PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Calling on the people to be wary, he said the two parties’ Malay-Muslim agenda undermines the Pakatan Harapan struggle to be fair to all races without sacrificing the interests of Malays, Islam and the royal institution.

“Don’t let our struggle get derailed. Don’t let Umno and PAS cause tensions between us. Don’t let their narrative dictate our political landscape,” he said during a ceramah in Taman Kelab Tuanku, Rantau, last night, ahead of the state seat’s April 13 by-election.

He assured Malay voters that PH is firm about guarding the community’s interests, as well as those of Islam and Malay rulers.

“I will not compromise when it comes to matters concerning Malays and Islam. But I will not sideline Indians and Chinese.

“Indians and Chinese must accept Malay rights, Malay rulers and the position of Bahasa Malaysia, and we, too, must accept their rights. What is important is that our fight does not change.”

Urging Rantau folk to vote for PH’s Dr S. Streram, Anwar assured them, especially Malays, that having an Indian representative is nothing to be worried about.

“The Negri Sembilan menteri besar is a Muslim, our prime minister is a Muslim. Malay rights and the special position of Islam are guaranteed at both the state and federal levels.

“So, don’t worry. It is not wrong to choose a non-Malay candidate. It will help us govern a multiracial society.”

Rantau comprises 55% Malays, 26% Indians and 18.5% Chinese.

The by-election is a four-cornered contest between Dr Streram, Barisan Nasional’s Mohamad Hasan, and independents R. Malarvizhi and Mohd Nor Yassin. – April 7, 2019.

  • Do you think then you need to do more hard work to counter these allegations so that harmony prevails..
    If the PM-in-waiting has this attitude, I dont think he would make a good PM.
    He should be there next to Tun M, joining forces and fighting for justice and harmony...
    Instead, he is issuing statements and busy with his in-house politics. He is really of NO USE!!
    Look at Wan Azizah... as DPM what has she achieved, when the country is going through turmoil? How significant is she?

  • Anwar is a PM in Waiting he is not a Minister DPM or PM or the Opposition Leader he is only a party President and a MP. No Executive Position or Executive Powers. There are limits to what he can say or do. He will have his say and do when the time comes.
