NATIONAL carrier Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) is seeking more technical details from Boeing on its aircraft in the wake of yesterday’s Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-8 crash.

“It is still too early to make any comments as the cause of the incident has yet to be ascertained. However, safety is of the utmost importance for the airline and we are taking the incident very seriously.

“We have written to Boeing seeking more technical details ahead of the delivery of our order,” MAB told The Malaysian Insight in an e-mail reply.

The airline did not respond to further queries.

MAB made a firm order for 25 737-Max 8 aircraft and 25 options in 2016, to replace planes that were due for replacement in 2019 and beyond.

In June 2017, the airline entered into a new agreement with Boeing to be allowed the option of taking 10 737 Max-10 aircraft in lieu of 10 737-Max 8 in the 2016 order.

The Max 10 aircraft are expected to commence delivery in early 2021.

Along with the Ethiopian authorities, regulators in China and Indonesia have temporarily suspended the use of Boeing 737 Max 8 due to safety concerns. Cayman Airlines is the latest to joint the list of airlines that have grounded the aircraft.

In October, a Lion Air flight crashed into the Java Sea in Indonesia shortly after takeoff. The plane was a Boeing 737 Max 8.

Earlier today Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali was reported as saying he would ask Khazanah Nasional Bhd to review MAB’s purchase agreement with Boeing.

The sovereign wealth fund is the shareholder of MAB.

At the time of writing, Boeing’s shares tumbled 12.02% to US$371.75 on the New York Stock Exchange in pre-market trading. – March 11, 2019.

  • Rubbish, seeking more details before making a decision.!! Say la, your profits are down and you cant afford to ground an plane.. even old ones....

After posting massive losses for impairment in 2018, I think you should change your tag phrase... Everyone Must Fly.... I was referring to the planes!!
    Q. What is there is a crash involving the plane? What then?
I think there is going to be a reduction in flight bookings so long you keep the plane model and make in the air..
