4 charged over online slurs on Islam, Prophet

BUKIT Aman has filed multiple charges against four people who had allegedly insulted Islam and the Prophet Muhammad on their social media platforms said Fuzi Harun.

In a statement today, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said that all four were variously prosecuted yesterday under Sections 298A and 505 from the Penal Code as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Section 298A covers the act of provoking religious unrest and is punishable by between two and five years’ imprisonment while Section 505 relates to incitement, which is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment and a fine.

The communications and multimedia act entails “Improper use of network facilities or network service, etc” and is punishable by up to a year’s imprisonment and a fine not more than RM50,000.

Fuzi said the Facebook user known as “Ayea Yea” had pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years and 10 months jail for his ten charges that will be served consecutively in Sarawak.

Operator of Twitter handle @Alvinchow333 claimed trial to all sections and is set for case mention on April 5, he is being held without bail.

The operator of the Yazid Kong Facebook account also admitted to a charge from the CMA and is awaiting sentencing which will be on March 11.

The operator of the Danny A’antonio Jr Facebook account pleaded not guilty to two charges under the Penal Code and is being held without bail until his trial on April 15.

As at March 5, police have received 929 police reports nationwide and opened 16 investigation papers related to insults made against Islam, the Prophet Muhammad and his wife Saidatina Aisyah. – March 9, 2019.
