THE public must be aware of the “stark realities” of an Umno and PAS merger, judging by their past acts which were riddled with corruption and abuse of power, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

“The public cannot ignore the stark realities of massive corruption and abuse during their period of governance, which the present government under Dr Mahathir Mohamad has to deal with,” he told reporters today.

Anwar was commenting on reports that Umno and PAS may use a common logo in the next general election in light of their successful cooperation in the recent Cameron Highlands and Semenyih by-elections.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan has been reported as saying that the matter would be discussed at a joint Umno-PAS consultation committee meeting tomorrow.

Anwar was quick to dismiss their plans, saying that he was not concerned about them.

“I am not too concerned about their initiative. They seem to be encouraged by the results of one by-election, they forget that they lost many seats in  GE14 and also in Port Dickson,” he said.

He said Pakatan Harapan aren’t oblivious to the loss in Semenyih and will improve.

“As far as we are concerned PH is committed to its agenda, of course (we have to) take notice of grievances and concerns of the electorate and we will improve,” he said.

He said PH needs to do more to connect with the people instead of turning their back and reneging on their promises after one defeat.

“PH has a transparent policy to assist Malaysians regardless of race and religion. This is not an issue of race, the past economic policies of the previous government has benefitted the rich and the corrupt,” he said at the launch of the DNA23 together with Multimedia and Communications Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

The DNA23 is an initiative to steer the nation towards the digital age.

The Port Dickson MP said PH’s policies must benefit the vast majority of poor Malays and also pockets of poor Chinese and Indians.

He said PH was not interested in playing the race card, unlike Umno and PAS.

“They talk about the race card while we are an inclusive government that caters to the welfare of all citizens,” he said.

During a campaign speech in Beranang, Semenyih, last week, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Nazri Aziz had accused the PH government of surrendering Malay rights to other races.

He also criticised the appointments of Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, Chief Justice Richard Malanjum and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, saying they are not Bumiputeras or Malays.

In Saturday’s by-election, BN candidate Zakaria Hanafi won a four-cornered contest with a majority of 1,914 votes to wrestle the Semenyih state seat from PH.

The by-election was called after the death of the previous assemblyman, PH’s Mohd Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, of a heart attack on January 11.

Bakhtiar had won the seat in the 14 general election with a 8,964-vote majority. – March 4, 2019.

  • Stop talking about who is clean. Most in PH today are from BN or has been working with and the issue of corruption persist, maybe PH practices greater corruptions especially when comes to significant increase in national debt after taking over government in two weeks without being audited or no proper explanation.
Let's come up with some genuine programs for the country n stop hintting BN before they take over the government back.
You n your entire PH top team are too good at pointing and even trying to throw all your parties weak performance towards BN. Show results first or get ready to quit. Bear in mind the demand of tax payers, voters n public is raising n if you n your team continue to perform without consolidating the needs, it'll be a unpleasured sorry, no matter how each n everyone carry themselves in PH as public performer for the country. Stop nonsense n politicking immediately and start working with no excuses for results. Don't get caught of your words of mouth n never underestimate the knowledge of today's public.

    • One thing for sure....there is no thief in PH as compared to bn....or at least no BIG thief....so that is a bonus unless you want handouts?... if so approach the thief...he will steal 100 n give you 5 and you will be very happy and forsake you dignity over the handout.

  • Totally agreed with Rashmir below, let the RAKYAT be the judge of things as of right now its best to get PH house in order first and starts delivering as I am worried the longer you wait the damaged cause later would be probably beyond repair. The signs are all written on the walls and if you can read that than you are just heading into the abyss.

  • I just cannot understand why any less financially able Malays would ever support BN. BN alway talks about Malay rights but all they did was enrich their own friends and family and used the country to do so.
