UMNO and PAS members have been told to revive the spirit of unity seen during the “Nadrah riots” 70 years ago so that the parties can rise once more.

Making the call at a ceramah in Semenyih last night, Selangor PAS Youth information chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said the 1950 incident showed that Malays are able to stand together, irrespective of their political leanings, to protect their race and religion.

“History taught us how the Nadrah incident brought Malays together to defend the young girl. Everyone worked together to defend Nadrah.

“And today, we want to revive the same spirit. I beg PAS members and Barisan Nasional friends to work together, so that we can defend our race and religion,” he said at the event, which was jointly organised by the Umno and PAS Youth wings.

Present were Umno Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Selangor Umno Youth head Rizam Ismail, Umno Supreme Council member Khaidhirah Abu Zahar and Selangor Umno Youth deputy secretary Norazley Yahya.

The Nadrah riots, which started on December 12, 1950, are seen to be the largest Malay gathering to defend the race and Islam. Thousands of people from all over Malaysia rallied in Singapore after a court ruled that 13-year-old Maria Hertogh, also known as Nadrah, who was raised by Muslims, should be returned to her Catholic biological parents.

The riots, which lasted until noon the next day, saw 18 people killed and 173 injured.

Sukri said the same spirit of unity must be shared between Umno and PAS in the March 2 Semenyih by-election.

“PAS is working with Umno based on our common stand on Islam. If it was because of power and money, we would have worked with Umno when the party was in power.

“We want PAS members in Semenyih to give their full support to the BN candidate.”

The by-election will see a four-cornered fight between Pakatan Harapan’s Muhammad Aiman Zainali, Zakaria Hanafi (BN), Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul (Parti Sosialis Malaysia) and Kuan Chee Heng (independent).

The polls were called after assemblyman Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, of Bersatu, died on January 11. – February 22, 2019.

  • All Malays in Malaysia have every right and govt support to earn your halal living absolutely with no barrier, hindrance and difficulty. Malays/bumiputra do not need UMNO or PAS to tell u to be united so that u will be given all the supports. It is written and guarded in our federal constituency. The Chinese , Indians and other races are well aware of this and wanted those poor Malays to come up fast. If u are a hard working, dedicated and fair minded Malays, u don't need Umno support in order to progress well in Malaysia. Only those lazy , racist and biased minded Malays need Umno to get fast and easy money in expense of the Malaysia Public. Open your eye , u sure notice this. That's why our country is behind others. Only a hard working and dedicated full force Malaysia workers can bring the country UP. No excuse for being lazy bcos u r destined to fail.

  • For me even using 'Nadra' seems illogical and wrong. Not returning a child to he biological parents when she was not adopted is against the law. Why would pas worry about the law anyway.

  • The Selangor PAS Youth- Mohamed Shukri Omar should be arrested immediately. His speech is inciting racial mayhem and alluding to Malays to protect whatever in this country rightfully theirs to declare. He is using the old history of religious conversion as a tool to stirr hatred for the nons and only UmnoPAS can gurantee their Malay rights to do any heinous crime. Is PH going to be docile in the guise of Democray and respecting the Rule of Law . This is no angelic actions but pure hypocritic in approach by PH and especially when the UmnoPAS extremes Malay activists voice out any thing about Bangsa dan Agama against the nons the response from the PH Malay Communal Party are very soft in response and never rebuke to set it right. . A big let down.
