SABAH Umno has regrouped after the exodus of its top leaders on December 12 last year, said Annuar Musa.
The party secretary-general said 90% of the Sabah leadership now is made up of new, energetic and young individuals.
“This is what Umno needs, young leaders who are energetic, fresh and without any excess political baggage to take over the leadership.
“This is important as a process to rejuvenate and strengthen the struggle of Sabah Umno,” he told reporters in Kota Kinabalu today.
Annuar earlier handed over the appointment letters to the divisional chiefs, Wanita, Youth and Puteri movements.
After going through the screening process, Sabah Umno remains the largest in terms of membership in the country, with more than 500,000 members, he said.
Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin is running the state chapter while Abdul Rahman Dahlan (Tuaran), Kamarlin Ombi (Lumadan) and Raimie Unggi (Tenom) remain as division chiefs.
The state chapter will be given full autonomy with the details or powers handed down from time to time, Annuar said.
Sabah Umno is already operating autonomously but it must also operate along the party constitution, he said.
Umno retains powers, such as picking election candidates.
“Providing autonomy to Sabah will also be crucial for Umno Malaysia as we need the advice of our Sabah leaders on how we could help Sabahans and return their rights,” he said. – February 8, 2019.
