OPPOSITION parties teaming up for elections is common in the political make-up of Malaysia, said MCA president Wee Ka Siong, referring to the Umno-PAS partnership for the Semenyih by-election on March 2.
He added that such partnerships had occurred numerous times in the past.
“I don’t see any problems arising in the by-election if there’s cooperation between opposition parties,” he said at MCA’s Chinese New Year open house.
He cited the former Pakatan Rakyat pact between PAS, DAP and PKR in 2008 after the 12th general election.
Wee did, however, acknowledge that the cooperation between Umno and PAS was limited to certain common goals and values.
MCA has previously voiced out disagreement to any pact between Umno and PAS without the consensus of all Barisan Nasional parties.
Umno’s cooperation with PAS has seen both parties give way to one another in two by-elections.
For the Semenyih by-election, PAS has decided to give way to Umno, adding there would be a joint Umno-PAS election machinery there.
Wee today announced that MCA would not field a candidate for the by-election and would support BN’s candidate.
The Semenyih seat fell vacant following the death of Pakatan Harapan assemblyman Bakhtiar Mohd Nor on January 11 due to a heart attack. He was 57.
In the 14th general election, Bakhtiar defeated BN, PAS and Parti Sosialis Malaysia candidates with a 8,964-vote majority, securing a total of 23,428 votes.
The by-election is likely to be contested by BN and PH. – February 5, 2019.
