UMNO is unperturbed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad’s plan to stump for votes in the Cameron Highlands by-election, said Khairy Jamaluddin.
The former youth and sports minister said the Malay party will continue with its campaign strategy to reach voters.
“We understand that Dr Mahathir will be coming down for the last two days of campaigning in Felda Sg Koyan, which has a lot of Malay voters.
“But we will continue with our programme. We are unperturbed by anyone from Pakatan Harapan coming down to campaign,” he said after visiting an Orang Asli settlement in Kg Sg Ruil.
The by-election will see a four-cornered fight between Pakatan Harapan’s M. Manogaran, Barisan Nasional’s Ramli Mohd Noor, and independents Sallehudin Ab Talib and Wong Seng Yee.
Khairy said that Dr Mahathir’s decision to visit Cameron Highlands is quite strange, as past prime ministers hardly came down to campaign trails for by-elections.
“Maybe this shows that Pakatan Harapan is anxious and takes the campaign seriously with Barisan Nasional’s reach in the campaign,” he said.
Dr Mahathir will make an appearance for Pakatan Harapan in Cameron Highlands on January 25, the eve of the by-election.
He will perform his prayers at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Mosque in Sg Koyan on Friday.
The prime minister will be among the leaders to appear on the Cameron Highlands campaign trail. – January 20, 2019.
