Sabah portion of Pan-Borneo Highway sees 10% progress, says minister

SOME 10% of progress has been made in the construction of the Sabah portion of the Pan-Borneo Highway project, Works Minister Baru Bian said today. 

This involved 12 packages that had been awarded to contractors since the project was launched three years ago, he said. 

“The project is still ongoing and we will try to finish it as it is a very important project that we need to complete. So, we will do our best to get it done,” he said at the launch of the Malaysian Standard for Civil Engineering Method of Measurement programme in Kota Kinabalu today. 

The Pan-Borneo Highway will connect Sabah and Sarawak through Brunei as well as to the Trans-Kalimantan Highway Indonesia road network.

The 2,325-km highway is funded by the federal government at an estimated cost of RM29 billion, and will be two lanes when it is completed by 2022.

Baru said he was told that there would be some delays in certain areas of the projects but hoped the contractors could still meet the timeframe they had provided to his ministry. – January 8, 2019.

  • What is YB Baru Bian saying? It appears that the Minister has s not completely updated on the project.. He talked about the 12 Packages. But Sabah Pan Borneo comprises 35 Packages! What happens to the remaining 23 Packages?

    Whatever it is, before the minister comments on the project, he should get his facts right!

    Its a known fact that the Sabah portion of the Pan Borneo Highway comprises 35 Packages for a total whopper of RM12.5 BILLION!

    Of this 35 Packages, only 12 Packages were awarded to Contractors in 2017 or early 2018. The balance of the 23 Packages were supposed to be awarded after GE14. But BN lost and the the 23 Packages have still Not been awarded until today!
    The MOF then said it wanted to review the projects due to the exorbitant cost and appointed consultants to review the projects in September 2018. The consultants were supposed to provided recommendations on the Pan Borneo Highway Project (Sarawak & Sabah portions) to MOF. But up till today, YB LGE /Minister of Finance has been silent about the status of the project. YB Baru Bian appears lost!

    Information on Pan Borneo Highway
    1. Sarawak portion: 12 large packages (all awarded) - RM16.49 Billion
    2. Sabah portion: 35 Packages (12 awarded) - RM12.5 Billion. For the remaining 23 Packages, Contractors were identified but were not appointed because of GE14.

    Question: With only 12 of the 35 Packages approved and work progressing on the Sabah side of the Pan Borneo Highway, HOW CAN THE HIGHWAY PROJECT BE COMPLETED AS A SINGLE HIGHWAY? ..
